This week a jury in Carlsbad, California found a teacher, Raymond Firth, and the Carlsbad School District responsible for molestation of two young girls. The jury unanimously awarded a total of $4.5 million to the two girls who were molested by Mr. Firth while they were in his third-grade classroom. The jurors found that Mr. Firth was 60 percent responsible and the school district was 40 percent responsible. The plaintiffs’ attorney successfully argued that the school district was also responsible for Mr. Firth’s actions because similar complaints were filed against the teacher years earlier. One attorney, David Ring, stated, “The message from this case is clear: schools need to make supervision of children their top priority.” Read more about the case here.
