The first Labor Day event happened in 1882 when a group of 10,000 workers walked off their jobs, forfeiting the day’s pay, to make a statement about the treatment of American workers. It became an official federal holiday in 1896. Today, there are many, many laws in place that protect the rights of people in the workplace, and workers have the official right to join unions. These laws allow us, our spouses, and friends to safely do our jobs and come home to our families.
