Three former Catholic school students are suing the Archdiocese of Miami and two schools alleging they were sexually abused by a Catholic brother who worked at the schools.
The suit alleges that Ken Ward, then dean of students at Monsignor Edward Pace High School and a brother of the Marist order, sexually assaulted the three men repeatedly while they were students in the 1990s. According to court documents, Ward would call the three students into his office and order them to disrobe after locking the door and closing the blinds.
One of the three men, each identified only as John Doe A, B, and C, is also accusing Rev. Gustavo Mivares, a supervisory principal in the archdiocese, of abusing him when Mivares and the former student were both at Immaculate Conception School. Mivares resigned from the archdioceses in 2006 after a former altar boy accused him of sexual abuse that occurred in the 1980s and sued the diocese.
The men are claiming that the archdiocese is guilty of negligence and engaged in a cover-up of the alleged abuse.
Ward, who was not an ordained priest, left the religious order and in 2012 obtained a registered nurse license. He now works at a psychiatric hospital in Fort Lauderdale.
